Color Combinations
Make Rugs Color Combinations for Hearts, Moons and More
Last updated:
Give your rug a different look by choosing yarn for each part of its pattern. Pick a palette below, match the yarn to the named regions, and finish with optional edging.
Quick answer
For a soft Inset Heart, use Cotton Cloud for Border and Wisteria for Heart. For a bold Moon and Stars rug, use Indigo Denim for Sky, Cherry for Crescent, and Marigold for all three stars. Mushroom options include Grape, Lemon, and Cotton Cloud; a red-and-gold Paw Print uses Cherry for Outline and Marigold for every pad. For a simple two-color finish, pair an Indigo Denim Simple Mat with purple edging.

Assign Colors to the Pattern's Regions
- Select your design and open Choose Your Yarn.
- Select a region or yarn assignment, then choose its material. For Inset Heart, assign the outer color to Border and the inner color to Heart.
- Fill every required assignment, then select Continue.
The design preview is not a fixed recipe: your yarn choices determine the colors. The numbers beside yarn names show available stock. If you cannot finish the assignments because you lack yarn, collect available material from the Collection Tray using E: Collect Yarn, then return. See the yarn guide for rolling, collection, and material colors.
Yarn requirements depend on the design. Inset Heart takes two portions, while the blue, red, and gold Moon and Stars palette uses three yarn selections across five regions.
Inset Heart's Border is a required, yarn-filled part of the pattern. The optional edging added after shaving is a separate finishing step.

Six Inset Heart Palettes
Choose one row and prepare one portion of each yarn. Border colors the outer heart; Heart colors the center.
| Border | Heart | Color combination |
|---|---|---|
| Blackberry | Rainwashed | Dark purple outside, blue-gray center |
| Orchid Satin | Sorbet | Purple outside, pink center |
| Cotton Cloud | Wisteria | White outside, lavender center |
| Wisteria | Flecked | Lavender outside, pale green center |
| Leaf | Sky | Green outside, blue center |
| Driftwood | Classic | Gray-brown outside, cream center |
Choose Blackberry and Rainwashed for a darker frame around a lighter center. Cotton Cloud and Wisteria or Wisteria and Flecked work well for a softer pastel look. Driftwood and Classic give the heart a more neutral palette, while Leaf and Sky make it brighter and more colorful.
Moon and Stars Background, Crescent and Star Colors
Sky is the background region, Crescent is the moon, and Top star, Side star, and Low star are the three stars. The region called Sky does not require the yarn named Sky.
Use the same star yarn for all three stars in these palettes:
| Palette | Sky | Crescent | Top star, Side star, and Low star |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blue, red, and gold | Indigo Denim | Cherry | Marigold |
| Gold, cream, and dusty pink | Marigold | Classic | Clay Blush |
| Pink, gold, and cream | Clay Blush | Marigold | Classic |
Indigo Denim, Cherry, and Marigold give the moon a strong red contrast against blue. Choose the Clay Blush background for a softer look with a golden moon and pale stars. The Marigold background makes the larger background area bright and warm.
Two more color directions to try:
- Bright yellow background: assign Lemon to Sky and build the palette with Marigold and Fern Twist as the other colors.
- Blue, yellow, and purple: use a blue background, a yellow crescent, and purple stars. Finish with brown edging for a contrasting outer frame.
Spotted Mushroom Palettes
Spotted Mushroom has Cap, Stem, Left spot, Top spot, and Right spot regions. Keep all three spots the same color to make them stand out clearly against the cap.
| Region | Purple, yellow, and white | Blue, red, and purple |
|---|---|---|
| Cap | Grape — purple | Sky — blue |
| Stem | Lemon — yellow | Cherry — red |
| Left spot | Cotton Cloud — pale white | Grape — purple |
| Top spot | Cotton Cloud — pale white | Grape — purple |
| Right spot | Cotton Cloud — pale white | Grape — purple |
Choose Grape, Lemon, and Cotton Cloud if you want pale spots to contrast with a purple cap. Choose Sky, Cherry, and Grape for a more saturated combination; brown optional edging adds a neutral outline around those bright colors.
Paw Print and Simple Mat Ideas
Paw Print
For a red-and-gold paw, assign Cherry to Outline and Marigold to Main pad and Toe 1–4. Keeping the main pad and all four toe pads gold makes the paw shape read as one color against the red outline.
For a purple-and-green paw, choose purple for Outline and green for Main pad and all four toe pads. This gives you a cooler alternative to the warm red-and-gold combination.
Simple Mat
Assign Indigo Denim to the mat's single body region, then add purple edging after shaving. With only one tufted color, the added border supplies the second color and defines the rounded rectangular shape.
Finish with an Optional Border
After shaving, use Add a Border? to finish the outer edge:
- Select an edging color, or choose None to skip it.
- If you choose a color, hold and drag around the rug's outer edge. Follow the edge progress indicator until the outline is complete.
- Select Finish when prompted.
Brown edging pairs with the blue-cap mushroom or the blue-background, yellow-moon, purple-star rug. Purple edging completes the Indigo Denim Simple Mat. For the white-and-lavender Inset Heart, None preserves the two-color look; a Cotton Cloud/Wisteria heart can reach 100% quality without extra edging.
